Pilot Testing
Cardno ERI has extensive experience in performing pilot testing of remedial technologies for the removal of contaminants from subsurface soils and groundwater. Based on your needs, Cardno ERI can pilot test different options using both active and passive remedial technologies. Our experience in implementing active technologies such as soil vapor extraction, air sparging, groundwater pump and treat, and high-vacuum dual-phase extraction testing allows Cardno ERI to provide you with more options in selecting the appropriate technology for site-specific conditions. Cardno ERI's passive technology evaluation includes chemical testing for the process of natural attenuation.
Testing Equipment
Cardno ERI owns and operates mobile dual-phase extraction trailers for use in performing pilot tests or longer-term remedial strategies. The trailers consist of a fluid separator, liquid-ring pump (LRP), LRP seal water tank, and transfer pumps and appurtenances with which to extract soil vapor and groundwater and abate with a catalytic oxidizer and/or activated carbon.
High-vacuum dual-phase extraction allows for expedited remediation of relatively impermeable soils (<0.2 darcies). Dual-phase extraction accomplishes this in two ways: (1) by creating greater head loss at the pumping well (head loss due to water drawdown plus vacuum), and (2) by drying out the vadose and dewatered zones, which allows hydrocarbons trapped in interstices to be reached and vapors to more readily migrate towards the extraction wells.
Cardno ERI typically utilizes the trailers to perform pilot tests ranging from one day to one week in duration. However, the trailers may be utilized as a temporary remedial alternative for periods of up to one year. This temporary alternative prevents disruption of properties by underground trenching, facilitates utility service connections, and may streamline the permitting process.
